Chapter 22

We made it back to our shelter without incident, and that evening we dined on a fine feast of grouper, coconut, and banana. Later, we sat on the beach and watched the sunset with our shoulders touching.

“What day is it?” she asked.

I had to think about it. “Well, let’s see. We crashed on Wednesday night, and this is our third day here, so that makes it Saturday.”

“Do you think we’ll be rescued soon?”

“Like I said, Steph, I don’t know. If I had to guess, I’d say yes, but it’d just be a guess.”

She leaned against me. “It’s okay. I’m not as scared as I was at first. I’m just worried about my family.”

“So am I, Steph. So am I.”

“I’m going to bed.”

“I’ll be up soon.”

“Goodnight, Mr. Bradshaw.” She kissed me on the cheek.

“Steph?”

“Yeah?”

“I think we can stop the mister stuff. Call me Donovan. Or just Van if you want.”

She smiled wide. “Really?”

“Yeah. Mr. Bradshaw makes me feel old.”

She giggled. “You’re definitely not old. Goodnight, Donovan.” She kissed my cheek again.

“Goodnight, Steph. I’ll be up to join you soon.”

I turned my head and watched her walk up the beach in the dwindling light, noticing how good her young body looked. Yeah, I needed to relieve the pressure building inside of me, or I was going to spend all day ogling my beautiful teenage friend. I was definitely going to have to take care of that tomorrow.
